By Air: The commonest and quickest way for travelers to reach Lhasa is by flying from Kathmandu (Nepal). This is one hour flight and offers fantastic panoramic views of the mountains (weather permitting). Air China (CA) is the only airline currently operating regular flights between Kathmandu & Lhasa sectors. Previously CA had been operating 2 weekly flights from April - June (i.e. Tue & Sat) & 3 weekly flights from July - October (i.e. Tue, Thur & Sat). And during the winter months from November thru March, operation of flights used to get suspended temporarily citing bad weather conditions and low visibility during this time.
However, beginning with Oct 29, 2006 CA not only decided to operate 1 flight on Saturdays during the winter months from November thru March but also regular flight frequencies have been increased as under:

By Surface: For hardy, adventurous travelers the idea of entering or leaving Tibet by road holds great appeal. The overland drive from Kathmandu to Lhasa is adventurous as well as scenic and takes around 5 days. The drive involves crossing of several high altitude passes and rewards you with spectacular mountain views.
By Air: China Air operates regular flights to Lhasa from Beijing, Shanghai, Kungming, Chengdu and Xian.

By Surface: Tibet's main northern road links Lhasa with Golmud, Qinghai Province, where the railroad terminates. The distance from Golmud to Lhasa is 1,155 km (720 miles). This is not an officially permitted way to enter Tibet but so many intrepid individuals have used it that it deserves to be mentioned.
In an effort to make access to Tibet easier, Chinese Ministry of Railway have completed construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The rail line connects Lhasa (Tibet) with Six Chinese cities namely Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xining and Lanzhou. The first train set off from Beijing to cover 48 hours journey on 1st July 06 and reached Lhasa on 3rd July darting across several high passes, the highest being Tanggula pass at 5,072 meter. The world's highest railway line boasts high-tech engineering and luxurious pressurized train cars used to help passengers cope with high altitude.
