Trekking in Nepal is an intense cultural experience as well as an exploration of one of the world’s most hiker-friendly and spectacular environments. Nepal has a staggering number of potential routes for trekkers. These are just not a pathways designed for recreational use, but a working transportation network for goods and people. While trekking you will see the great diversity of Nepal. Villages embrace many ethnic groups and cultures. The beauty and attraction of the Nepal Himalaya emanates not only from the mountains themselves, but also from their surroundings

There are two contrasting approaches to trekking in Nepal. The independently minded opt for tea house trekking, moving from village to village along mostly well trodden routes, enjoying the lodges with their mix of foreigners and locals and nights of story telling around the fire. The other approach is to go on an organized trip where porters and guides are hired to bring along tents, cooking equipment and food. These are ideal for discovering more remote areas and learning about the varied cultures and people of Nepal first hand.

REGION: ANNAPURNA

Central Nepal is dominated by the Annapurna Himal and the village of Pokhara. North of Pokhara, Nepal’s spectacular diversity appears at its finest. The deep valleys and high mountains encircling the giant Annapurna Himal embrace a wide range of peoples and terrain, from subtropical jungle to a high, dry landscape resembling the Tibetan Plateau. Alpine meadows, bamboo forests, and a variety of trees make a day’s experience remarkable. Wildlife includes the barking deer, and blue sheep. You will be working

through rhododendron forests over the foothills of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest in the world, and Lake Tilicho (4,919m), the highest lake are located here. Its the most popular trekking destination in Nepal. About two thirds of the trekkers in Nepal visit the Annapurna region. The area is easily accessible, hotels in the hills are plentiful and treks here offer good scenery of both high mountains and lowland villages. Besides the tea house treks you can also go for short and scenic off beaten trek completely out of heavy traffic.

There are several beautiful trekking trail in this region with lots of flexibility, it can be arranged as per your schedule. But the most popular among them are listed below :

REGION: SOLUKHUMBU

The highest mountain in the world continues to lure adventurers as ever. The Khumbu, known commonly as the Everest region, is the home of the Sherpa people, the mysterious Yeti and of course the highest mountain of the world Everest 8848 m. Solu Khumbu is justifiably famous, not only for its proximity to the world’s highest mountain (8848 metres), but also for its Sherpa villages and monasteries. The Sherpa home land is still dominated by the old mountain gods, their language, customs and religion reflect their Tibetan origins. Their traditional life combined yak-herding, barley and potato farming, and trading with nearby Tibet. This classic walk through the Sherpa homeland of Solu Khumbu is a tough trek with a clear cut aim to see Everest. You must either walk for 9 days or fly to Lukla , a remote airstrip where flights are notoriously unreliable. It is important to allow enough time on this trek for acclimatization.

REGION: NORTH OF KATHMANDU

The Langtang-Helambu-Gosainkund region is easily accessible from Kathmandu, but the easy access doesn't mean you lose out on quality. Langtang in particular is among the finest mountain treks anyone could hope for. Langtang is a narrow valley that lies just south of the Tibetan border. This high and isolated region is inhabited by Tamangs whose religious practices, language and dress are much more similar to those of Tibet than to the traditions of their cousins in the middle hills. The upper valley is a grazing paradise, rich in flowers and grass and dotted with stone huts used in the summertime butter-making. Sewn in skins and exported to Tibet to flavor tea and fuel monastery lamps, butter was once the region's major industry.

Gosainkund, high atop an open ridge, has more minor, shorter treks than Langtang. Gosainkund Lake (4,298 m), is sacred to Shiva, whom devotees claim they see floating in the bottom of the lake in the form of a large rock. Shiva is said to have created holy Gosainkund Lake with his trident, and its waters are believed to be connected via subterranean channels to Patan's Khumbeshwar Mahadev temple. Thousands of pilgrims flock here for the Janai Purnima festival (usually the August full moon). A nearby summit to the north yields excellent mountain views. Helambu is about 75 km north of Kathmandu and is the most easily accessible of all the trekking regions. This area is inhabited by Sherpas as well, although they are very different from the Solu Khumbu Sherpas with a different language, culture and dress. The Helambu trek is popular because it is short, stays below 3500m and is feasible even in the winter. If time is not a constraint then its nice to start from Langtang and end at Helambu via the Holy lake Gosainkund.

REGION: EASTERN NEPAL

Lower, greener and friendlier, eastern Nepal is altogether more welcoming than the west, yet it’s virtually untouched by trekkers.Eastern Nepal is characterized by different hill ethnic groups from those in the central and western regions. Trekking goals in eastern Nepal include Makalu base camp, Kanchenjunga and an eastern approach to Everest. For a trekker, this area is attractive because it is less visited by tourists, the rhododendron forests are perhaps the most spectacular in Nepal, and the mountain scenery offers new vistas. The area has hot, rice-growing districts and also encompasses, the cooler tea-growing region of Ilam. The high mountain regions are pretty well uninhabited and so those venturing there must be entirely self-sufficient. There are no organized help or rescue facilities like those in Manang in Khumbu.
Organized Trek
Kanchenjunga Trek 22/30 Days Strenous
Makalu 20/25 Days Strenous
Arun Valley Trek 16/19 Days Grade - Medium (Tea house can be done but a bit rough)

REGION: WESTERN NEPAL

The region west of the Kali Gandaki river, offers a chance to visit fascinating country and people, it is good for the trekker who has already done the popular trek. This is the most remote and least-known section of Nepal. Stretching all the way from Dhaulagiri to the Mahakali River on the nation’s western border, Very few people in the area speak English, trails tend to be more difficult, and the country is more rugged whereas the Himalayan peaks are less spectacular then from the Northern and Eastern part. It is more difficult to get the feeling of being in the mountains that Khumbu, Kangchenjunga, Makalu, the Thorung La region, and Langtang provide. Both Buddhists and Hindus here worship Masta, an indigenous folk deity whose shrines are dotted across the countryside and every village has its long hair Dhami or Jhankri, entrusted with healing and religious rituals. Town of Jumla is the hub of the region. But for the seeker of impressive forests, rugged, sometimes stark terrain, and fascinating people with unusual customs, the west may be the best.

Gosainkund

Gosainkund is a holy lake for the Hindus, it is said to be created by Lord Shiva when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after consuming some poison. It is also believed that the water from this lake disappears underground and appears in Kumbeshwar pool, next to the five-storey Shiva Temple in Patan. Hundreds of people travels here to worship and take bathe in the lake during the full moon festival each August.

]For us it is exploring this sacred site of Hindus Gosainkund lake with wonderful mountain views, and crossing a 4,610 m high pass. The mountains that you can see during this trek are Annapurnas, Manaslu (8,156 m), Ganesh Himal (7,406 m) Langtang Lirung and other unnamed peaks in Tibet. This trail ascends through forests to high alpine lakes. The lakes are not difficult to reach, but a lot of climbing on narrow trails is involved. There are not many people living in this remote area, but it is famous for mountain view.

Kanchenjunga the third highest peak of the world falls in complete wilderness where you will be just with nature and mountains. It was opened to trekking only in 1988 although people have trekked in the area in connection with mountaineering expeditions since the turn of the century. Trail takes you from the southeastern corner of Nepal at altitudes of just 70m to the base camp of Kanchenjunga, one of the greatest mountain masses in the world. It is one of Nepal’s least trekked areas and certainly one of the best. Foothills of Kanchenjunga is the home of Limbus and it borders the Indian state of Sikkim, so the circuit of the mountain is politically impossible. You can either trek to the north or south Kanchenjunga base camp or best alternative is to visit both South and North Kanchenjunga. This region remains technically restricted your trek has to be arranged through registered trekking agency and get special permit. Also this trek is very strenuous so one needs to be physically fit.

MAKALU WITH NATURE

This is an outstanding trek in eastern Nepal. One of the bigger eight thousand in the Himalayas. The trek to Makalu Base Camp visits one of the most remote and unfrequented areas of Nepal. The long trek and unspoiled terrain makes this trek a classic in its own . There are spectacular views of rugged Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Makalu (8463m), fifth highest in the world, Mt. Chamlang (7319 m) and Mt. Baruntse (7129m). With about 40 kms, these high peaks plunge downward to 670m. at the Arun river. This provides stunning contrasts, where high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, craggy rocks rise from lush green forests, and colourful flowers bloom beneath white snow peaks. This unique landscape shelters some of the last pristine mountain ecosystems on earth. Rare species of animals and plants flourish in diverse climates and habitats, relatively undisturbed by man. In Makalu-Barun National Park are some 3000 species of flowering plants, 440 species of birds, and 75 species of mammals, including the endangered clouded leopard, red panda and musk deer. This remarkable biodiversity is considered to be of global significance, and provides a living laboratory for international scientific research.

Its a long trek up the Arun Kosi, then climb over a high pass into the remote Barun Valley, protected as Nepal’s newest national park. A rough trail leads past yak pastures and glaciers to the foot of Makalu. This trek goes high up to 5000m.One has to be physically fit , as this trek is graded 4.

Duration : 22 days
Difficulty : Medium - Demanding
Maximum elevation : 5000 m
Season : March/April & October/November

Around Dhaulagiri Trek

Dhaulagiri 8167m the seventh highest peak in the world with its massive snowy white bulk dominates the central west Nepal. It stands alone above the great Kali Gandaki Valley. This valley is the deepest on earth as it is flanked by two 8000m peaks – Dhaulagiri I and Annapurna I. This is a long and difficult trek around Dhaulagiri which starts from Beni but offers breathtaking view of massive south face as well as the chance to explore the remote valleys hidden away from its bulk. We begin this trek with a drive of about 10/12 hours to Beni, spend the night at Beni. Next day we start our trek by following the Mayangdi Khola west wards and through exquiste forests of pine, rhododendron and fir to emerge on the Kaphe Glacier. From here we climb up to French Pass (5,240m) and descend to wild and untraveled valleys where sometimes Bharal (Blue Sheep) can be seen during summer. Then the trail takes over the Thapa La (5350 m) which provides you a magnificent views of the great Kali Gandaki Gorge. You can end your trek with a steep descent to Marpha and then walk up to Jomsom and take a flight to Pokhara or return to Pokhara via Ghorapani ridge for a panoramic views of the entire Dhaulagiri massif. This trek is categorize as hard trek and you need to be in excellent shape of health.

Duration : 18 days
Difficulty: Demanding
Maximum elevation : 5000 m
Season : March/April & October

Manaslu

Another less frequented trek, but otherwise this trek has always been the domain of the mountaineering expedition. Manaslu (8,156 m) was attempted by Japanese expeditions every year from 1952-1956 when the first ascent was made. Manaslu came to be known as Japanese Mountain. This one a circuit around the eight highest mountain in the world Manaslu is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinating. Though crossing the Larkya La is not that difficult but the trek around Manslu is harder than most in Nepal. The trail is rough and steep and it often literally hangs on a bluff high above the river. We do not suggest to some one having slightest tendency towards acrophobia. Also the trek is remote and has no rescue facilites or opportunities to bail out if you are tired. A rough trail heads up to the Burhi Gandaki through wild Gurung country to Nupri. Nupri inhabitat by Tibetan immigrants provides a fantastic mountain views and crossing of the Larkya La is one of th emost dramatic of any pass in the Himalaya This area still falls on the restricted area and has to go according to HMG rules and regulation.

Days : 20 Days
Difficulty : Moderate to Demanding
Max Elevation : 5100 m
Season : March/April & October/November

LOWER DOLPO TREK

Dolpo preserves one of the last remnants of traditional Tibetan culture. This is a walk through the wild west of Nepal its strange mixture of ethnic groups. Surrounded by high mountains including the Dhaulagiri massif to the southeast and cut off by high passes closed by snow half the year. Phuksumdo Lake 3,627 m is the highlight of the whole trek, a basin of unearthly turquoise blue ringed by rocky crags and forest, framed by snowcapped peaks. There are no lodges so everything has to be organized before the trip. Veteran traveler David Snellgrove raved over its beauty: “Here we set up camp, feeling that we had come at last to the paradise of the Buddha ‘Boundless Light’. The water is edged with silver birch and the gleaming whiteness of the branches against the unearthly blue of the water is one of the most blissful things that I have know,”

Days : 9/20
Difficulty : Moderate
Max. Elevation : 3820 m
Season : March to October
Access : Good to fly Kathmandu-Nepalgunj-Jumla/Juphel

Upper Dolpo

Beyond the beautiful Phoksumdo Lake lies the upper Dolpo or the Inner Dolpo. You have to start this trek from lower part of Dolpo and then along the difficult trail crossing high passes from Phoksumdo Lake to the legendary Crystal Mountain and Shey Gompa. Shey was closed to foreigners until 1992 now it has been opened but under restricted area and has to follow the restriction rules and regulation

Period : 15/26 days
Difficulty : Moderate
Max. Elevation : 5400 m
Season : May-October
Access : From Juphel/Jumla

ROLWALING ADVENTURE

Rolwaling is the east-west valley below Gauri Shankar (7145 m). This is an isolated and culturally diverse area. There are several mysterious stories about this valley through which the forefathers of the present-day Sherpa's once came. It is here that the notorious and celebrated Yeti is supposed to make his home. Entire research expeditions so far have failed to trace it out.

The trail leads you through a wealth of variety on one hand through Tamang and Chettri villages with their typical terraced fields, on the other through dense, gloomy primeval forests and over broad ridge backs with wonderful views. Rolwaling and Tesi Lepcha are technically closed to foreigners but by buying a climbing permit of one peak i.e. Ramdung you will be able to explore the richness of this area and if interested you can try to summit the peak.
