The Hornbill Festival normally takes place around first week of December and its one of the biggest festival in Nagaland. A narrow strip of mountainous territory with rugged hills, emerald valleys, sparkling streams and a rich variety of flora and fauna, the 16th State of the Indian Union has salubrious climate throughout the year. This is a land of diverse tribal culture and is a land of festivals.
The Tribes of Nagaland celebrates their festival with gusto and fervor. Around 60% of the population of Nagaland depends on agriculture and therefore most of their festivals revolve round agriculture. They consider their festivals sacred and so participation in these festival is a must.
The Hornbill festival takes place at Naga Heritage Village, Kisam which is about 12 km from Kohima. The Festival is named after the hornbill, the globally respected bird and which is displayed in folklore in most of the state's tribes. This festival showcases a melange of cultural displays under one roof. The aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions.
